Emmett Hansen

Mr. Emmett Hansen of the class of 1988 is running for Virgin Island Delegate to Congress.
Emmett Hansen II is a proud native Virgin Islander and a life-long Democrat. Active in the Democratic Party for 35 years, he is currently the V. I. Democratic National Committeeman, the immediate former State Chairman and served the Virgin Islands as a two-term Democratic Senator. He is also a co-founder and past vice-president of the St. Croix Young Democrats and served as press secretary to former Lt. Governor Derek M. Hodge. He is a member of the Democratic National Committee and was recently successful in getting two resolutions (to eliminate the costly “international” shipping status in the Virgin Islands and to utilize the monies allocated for Virgin Islands’ veterans within the Virgin Islands) passed unanimously during the DNC Winter meeting in February 2014. Another resolution (regarding including the discussion of full citizenry for Virgin Islands within the context of the Immigration Bill) was sent directly to President Barack Obama’s policy advisors.
He is a graduate of Dillard University and the Dept. of Defense’s Defense Information School. His degrees are in English Literature and Public Affairs and Photo-journalism, respectively. He is a Life Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He was inducted through the Beta Phi Chapter in 1980 and is a member of the Iota Sigma Lambda Chapter. He is a member of Caribbean Life Lodge No. 101, as well.
He has also taken graduate courses in Public Administration at the University of the Virgin Islands. His work history includes teaching English at the J.H Woodson Jr. High School, a journalist at the Daily News, sports editor at the St. Croix Avis, an Orleans Parish deputy sheriff and is currently a business counselor at the award-winning Small Business Development Center in St. Croix. His community volunteer resume includes serving on the boards of the St. Croix Chamber of Commerce, the Boy Scouts of America, the Virgin Islands Parole Board and the Red Cross. He has also been both a volunteer and board member of the Blue Marlins Swim Team and a coach and volunteer for Mongoose Dem and Mongoose Dem Too in the Elmo Plaskett Little League East.
