It is festival season in New Orleans. Festivals will be commonly held around the city of New Orleans until the late fall. Despite all of the success of these many festivals Jazz Fest holds the crown as the Queen of all festivals.
However, Mr. Michael Patrick Welch in his new article “Before Jazz Fest, there was the Afro-American Arts Festival” in the Louisiana Weekly reminds us of Dillard University influence and contribution to the heritage of New Orleans festivals.
The Afro-American Arts Festival was an event completely done by Dillard University students on the campus of Dillard University in the late 1960s and early 1970s. We hope more research and scholarship will be conducted on the cultural and historical impact of Dillard University on the city of New Orleans and the world.
